Books for the Young
Today I am going to share books for your youngest kids. The ages of these books range from baby to kindergarten. They are a variety of board books and picture books. The topics range from travel, family, transportation and more!! I hope you will check them out for your little ones!!

The Night Knights -- a new picture book for the kids who are scared at night
Do you have a child who is afraid of the dark or of going to bed? Does he or she think there might be monsters in his or her room? Hazel was this child. She often got afraid to be alone at night and was very afraid of the dark. She has grown out of it mostly, but there are still times when it comes back. However for the younger kids today I am sharing a wonderful new book to help. It is The Night Knights by Gideon Sterer and illustrated by Cory Godbey.

Picture Books about Love for Valentine's Day
Can you believe Valentine's Day is next Wednesday? Are you ready? We are. While Hazel was home sick this week we put together her fairy Valentines from a kit from Paper Source. We have a little magic trick to go with them from Oriental Trading, but we will share about that next week.

Picture Books about Night and Sleep
Tonight I am going to share some new picture books about sleep and nighttime. Are your kids afraid of nighttime darkness? Or perhaps they just do not like going to sleep? These books are perfect for you then! Our first book is Time Now to Dream by Timothy Knapman and illustrated by Helen Oxenbury.
Books to Add STEM to Your Summer

It seems everywhere you look people are talking about STEM. The products at Lakeshore Learning seem to be labeled STEM or STEAM. This is the latest educational craze and it is about time. As a former math teacher I know the importance of math and science for our kids. I also know that it is important for them to be taught at a young age so they can really enjoy learning them. And for the most part kids love learning science!! It is one of the few places that hands-on learning is not made up it just is. The experiments and discoveries are natural and normal. They lead to real life math problems as well. However this is often where the elementary teachers have a shortfall. Since our elementary teachers teach all the subjects: reading, math, science, social studies, phonics, handwriting and grammar; they often focus on their favorites or what they feel are easiest for them to teach. It makes sense. Unfortunately it is often not math or science and sometimes the teacher's own insecurities of these subjects can be passed on (as well as the parents') by how it is taught and approached. It seems that the publishers and educational toy makers have finally realized they needed to bring products to parents and teachers to make teaching these subjects easier. After all in this high tech world science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are the careers of the future. So today I am going to share with you some great resources to bring a little STEM into your house this summer as well as a few of the lessons we did for our science units as I homeschooled Hazel the last six weeks of second grade.
Religious Books for Different Ages
Today we are going to share with you some wonderful religious themed books for different ages. This post will also include three Hazel's Corners! The first is Princess Prayers by Jeanna Young, Jacqueline Kinney Johnson, and Omar Aranda. This a sparkly book filled with prayers for various times of day and different events for your little princess.

Tonight I am going to share some books having to do with animals. This group of books has things for different ages from board books to posters and more. Are you ready for some animal fun? We will start with Animalium Poster Book by Susanna Davidson and illustrated by Katie Scott and Jenny Broom.

After spending a fun snow day at home with Hazel, I think it is appropriate to share some fun books about homes. We will start with The Road Home by Katie Cotton and illustrated by Sarah Jacoby.

Help with Bedtime!!
How is your child's bedtime routine and sleep? Does he or she get enough? Do you know how much is enough? These are questions I have been struggling with for a few months. No matter how much Hazel seemed to sleep she always complained about being tired. So finally I took her to the doctor who referred us to Boston's Children's Hospital Sleep Center. Hazel has many fears and her biggest one is of being alone, so often she was waking up in the night and calling one of us in or one of us was sleeping with her every night. Needless to say none of us were getting a good night's sleep.

Books for Younger Kids -- Back-to-School
As we continue our back to school week I thought we would look at some books for our younger kids. The first book is perfect for toddlers and beginning readers. It is a fun board book. It is City Block by Christopher Franceschelli and art by Peskimo.

Summertime Fun -- Bedtime Fun
Part of summertime fun is the change in our routine. Without school at 8 a.m. we are letting Hazel stay up a bit later and this is making her sleep later, which means I get to sleep later!! She has been so excited for the change in the bedtime routine. We are still working out the kinks since some nights she is staying up later than Daddy. We also have allowed her to stay up even later on Tuesday nights to watch Chopped Junior.
Our summer night time routine has been that Hazel has to read to my parents on the phone and be ready to go to bed by 8 p.m. and then I read to her. Steve goes in and lays with her for about ten minutes (while her baby music toy plays) and then he leaves. He puts a body pillow in the bed beside her to trick her into thinking someone is there when she is sleeping. She hates being alone.
Summer Reading -- Fun Picture Books
Are your kids working on their summer reading and/or summer homework? I know we are and I have to admit I find it to be a bit of a pain. The part we enjoy however is the daily reading. Hazel reads at least a book or a chapter if it is a chapter book to my parents each night before bedtime. If they are not available, she reads to me. She is loving reading from her summer reading list but she also loves to read some of the new picture books we have received. Here are four fun ones to share today. Next week we will share some middle grade chapter books and have some suggestions throughout the summer. Be sure to check back for all of our recommendations. The books today are fun books. Many of them are rather funny.

Are you looking for some fun books to read aloud or have your children read to themselves? Here are two new ones that are perfect!! Now I will say that you may not want to read them at bedtime, because they had us laughing so much I think it got Hazel a little restless and not really ready to fall asleep (Sorry, Steve). The first book is a reimagined version of Hansel and Gretel, it is Hensel and Gretel Ninja Chicks by Corey Rosen Schwartz and Rebecca J. Gomez and illustrated by Dan Santat. From the name you can tell this book involves chickens!!
