Whooo Is Still Awake? -- Picture Book Review

Disclosure: I was sent a copy of this book in order to provide an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I feel like winter brings up lessons on animals. When Hazel was young, I remember winter bringing lessons on animals in particular ones that hibernate and then arctic animals. Another type of animals is nocturnal. Today we are sharing a new picture book about nocturnal animals. It is a great introduction to them and a great bedtime book. The book is Whooo Is Still Awake? by Brigette Barrager. It is recommended for ages 4 to 8 and is being released today!

About the Book:

Follow two curious owls on an enchanting nighttime adventure as they meet other nocturnal animals in this rhyming picture book by the illustrator of the New York Times bestselling Uni the Unicorn series – perfect for bedtime reading!

It’s time we flew.
The night is new – so much to do.
Whooo is still awake?

As the moon rises and the stars twinkle, two little owls take flight into moonlit woods. With a joyful “Whooo? Whooo?” they explore the night, meeting nocturnal friends along the way. From fluttering moths and playful raccoons to creeping black cats and trotting skunks, each page turn introduces readers to a new surprise.

Rhythmic, lyrical text and charming illustrations make this a fun read-aloud for young readers who are curious about the nighttime world. By the time dawn breaks and spiderwebs glisten with dew, everyone will be ready to yawn, coo, and snuggle up for a cozy sleep.

From Me:

This book is a sweet story about a pair of owls who wake up and go for their nightly flight. With lyrical rhymes they see other animals who are awake during the night. They see moths, raccoons, a black cat, possums, skunks, coyotes, bears, and a spider on a web as the night is ending. As dawn is just approaching, they return to their tree and are getting sleepy. They ask if the reader is as well.

The words are fun, and the illustrations are beautiful. I love the colors of the sky in each one. The reader sees the sky from sunset to sunrise. The colors change throughout the night and gives the book another dimension that adults and children can discuss. Kids often wonder what really happens at night when they sleep. This book gives them some idea and certainly can open discussions about who is awake overnight and how the sky looks. It is also a wonderful introduction for a unit on nocturnal animals. If used in a classroom it would be great to talk about why these animals are awake at night.

It is a sweet book that is perfect for kids who love animals, wonder about the night or just need a good bedtime story. It is also perfect for the early elementary classes learning about different types of animals. This one introduces nocturnal animals in a fun way with different animals that can be expanded on. Plus it also shares the various colors of the sky as well as the stars to discuss the science of the night sky.
