I've been wanting to share this idea with you for some time, but it took a while to find the time to actually try it out. I wanted to play with my Cricut and make some Christmas ornaments. A few months ago, Dollar Tree had its vinyl on clearance for 25 cents a roll. I picked up a bunch of holiday colors and more to play with. Then I got some clear ornament blanks. I got them online. I also picked up some holiday scrapbook paper. With some ModPodge and an Exacto knife, I got to work.
To make them, remove one side of the protective film and put a thin layer of matte Mod Podge. Then put it on the piece of scrapbook paper. Make sure to place it over the part of the page you want to show. I put a heavy book over the ornaments upside down to make sure they laid flat. After giving them about 30 minutes to dry I took an Exacto knife and cut around the ornaments. I didn't worry about the hole for the string yet. Then I used gloss Mod Podge on the other side of the paper. Some of the paper I had was double sided which worked great. Here is what the backs of the ornaments look like.
I put some of my vinyl on some of the backs. I did two layers of the gloss Mod Podge first though and let each layer dry completely. Once the glue was dry I retrimmed the edges and cut the holes. Then I took the other side's protective film off. Now is your chance to personalize them. I used some vinyl I cut out in various holiday shapes and words. You could also use paint or Sharpies to personalize them.
I then put the strings in them. I put the one that says Hazel on one of her gifts and am thinking of making some more for other gifts. What do you think?
