Can you believe it? December has arrived! The day after Thanksgiving Hazel and I decorated our tree. The day after she left for school, the tree came crashing down and is unfixable. (It is over 40 years old.) I ordered a new tree today. When it arrives, I'll get it up and put the lights on and then wait for her to come back from school! So much for Christmas magic in my house. Or perhaps it is the villain from today's book trying to destroy Christmas. Today we get to share a magical Christmas middle grade adventure, or I should say adventures since it is a trilogy. The book is Magic in the Mountains: A Christmas Trilogy Written by T.E. Milburn and Illustrated by Ayşe Yıldırım. It has all the magical creatures--elves, goblins, dragons, talking animals, yetis and Santa! This is going to be epic!!

From Me:
Magic, family time, friends, mystery, and Christmas spirit--this book has it all! There is excitement and wonder throughout it. Imagine meeting Santa's elves because Santa has been kidnapped and he needs your help to escape! Each of the books in the trilogy have interesting plot lines and various things happening that all lead to one thing--someone wants to destroy Christmas. The reader gets to join Alex and Noah as they go through these adventures and become friends with elves, polar bears, yetis, and an arctic fox. They and their parents even get to join or should I say help Santa deliver the gifts. All because a magic crystal picked them!
Each book has its own plot and takes place in consecutive years. There is action and fun on each page. The boys themselves are avid snowboarders and love water parks. Each brother has his own personality, and their characters are well developed. Each of the books also have female friends the boys make and who help them on their adventures. Therefore, it is not just a book for boys!! Honestly, I can see anyone who loves Christmas enjoying this book. It also would make a great family read aloud story for the season. The brothers and their parents are very family oriented, and it is truly about being a family as well as Christmas spirit. This book has the excitement and action that many kids crave as well as some of the family time and true kindness and Christmas spirit that helps get everyone into the holiday spirit. I will note here that there is no religious part to the story. It is a story about Santa Claus and the North Pole but does not mention the birth of Jesus.
The book also has beautiful black and white illustrations of some of the scenes. They are not on every page but throughout the chapters. They help visualize the scenes as well as some of the magical creatures. The illustrations add to the story but also would be wonderful for reading it aloud and discussing the pictures. I can see this book being enjoyed in so many different ways. Kids will love reading it themselves and families will enjoy the family time and taking a break together from the preholiday chaos to read it. It truly brings out so much of what I love of Christmas. I hope you will enjoy it as well!
