Today I am sharing a new picture book (released last week) that is pure fun. Imagine if animals wore shoes. What kind of shoes would each animal choose? That it is the premise of the book. The book is What Kind of Shoes Does a Hippopotamus Choose? by Kat Maconie and illustrated by Sebastien Braun. It is recommended for ages 3 to 7.

This is going to be a read aloud favorite!! Whether it is at home, bedtime, the library or school, kids will be asking for this one again and again. It is so fun!! The rhyming words and the amazing illustrations as well as just the craziness of animals in shoes (and boots, slippers, etc.). Can you imagine your pet cat in ballet flats? Or your pet dog in fashionable clogs? The kids will quickly learn the shoes and call them out easily. It will have everyone laughing.

The creativity and humor in this book are amazing. It will be entertaining to both the adult and the kids. The big overall question throughout the book is what the hippopotamus will choose and at the end the reader finds out!

The animals include alligators, crocodiles, dogs, cats, donkeys, bunnies, elephants, sloths, dolphins, weasels, lemurs, bison, bears, monkeys, centipedes, and of course a hippopotamus. Besides being a fun book to read aloud at any time, it would be a great book for an animal unit or a unit on shoes.

Since the animals in this book are choosing all different kinds of footwear--shoes, boots, slippers and more, I thought it would be fun for kids to do a shoe or footwear craft with it. I gathered some for you to check out! Some are definitely for older kids or for adults to make for kids.
