3) From For the Children: Ladybugs!! (Ok, I admit I have a bit of an obsession right now since my daughter's symbol for her nursery class is the ladybug, but what great ideas!)

Toy Stop / Slow Sign

Last week after lunch with Hazel's best friend and his mother, the four of us went over to Lakeshore Learning Store. Hazel's friend really wanted a toy stop / slow sign. His mother really did not want to spend the $10 on it. I tried to convince him we could make one at my house when we got there, but he really wanted that one. She bought it for him. Hazel did not ask since she heard it was expensive and we could make one. We came home and made one for Hazel after they left.

To make it, I printed out an octagon sign with STOP and an octagon sign with SLOW (similar to the toy and not the traffic ones). Then we glued them to scrap cardboard. We let the glue dry. Here is my Word Document of the sign.

Then we taped a tongue depressor to the back of the signs and glued the signs together. We placed them under our dictionary but any large, heavy book will work to let the glue dry. I wanted to seal it in clear Contact paper, but I need to buy some and she wanted to play with it right away. Of course it hasn't come back out since the first day, but at least I didn't spend $10 on it and made hers for free.

Large Chenille Stem Animals

Have you entered my current giveaway yet? Please do!!

I bought a couple of packages of those really large and furry chenille stems on clearance awhile ago. We decided to make some animals with them. I made some bunnies, a duck and a frog.
Then Hazel made some snails (with a little help) and a bracelet (that I think started as a duck or bunny).
We also made some shamrocks, since this was pre-St. Patrick's Day. We discovered the extra large ones didn't work as well as the next size down for shamrocks.

Some More Easter Crafts

Have you entered my giveaway?
Now that St. Patrick's Day is past I am going to share some more of our Easter and Holy Week crafts. Both of these craft ideas came from Catholic Icing.

First I will share our Last Supper Craft. We actually brought this to church for use with the 3-5 year-old classroom when they talked about the Last Supper. When the minister saw it he said he would like to have it in the church for the Maudy Thursday Service. This is very easy to do since at Catholic Icing: Holy Thursday/Last Supper Craft you can print all the people and the table clothes, and just follow her tutorial. Hazel really enjoyed it and liked learning a bit more about the disciples.
We also got the idea for a crown of thorns at Catholic Icing. Somewhere I saw that you could remove the toothpicks on the Saturday before Easter and make it an Easter wreath by adding flowers to it. We are planning on doing this. Plus we have been reading several stories about the robin and the thorn, which of course ties right into this. We had a lovely book out of the library, but I returned it without writing down the name. It told in a bit more detail the legend of the thorn and the robin. You can read an on-line version here.

Virtual Book Club for Kids & Giveaway--Room on the Broom

As I mentioned in my introduction post, the March Author for the Virtual Book Club for Kids is Julia Donaldson. Now before she was picked, I had not heard of Julia Donaldson. Now I am so glad I have. Now onto our book. First I will say Hazel often goes around with her little broom between her legs telling me she is flying. Needless to say why we love this book! This story is about a witch and her cat going out for a ride on the witch's broom. However she keeps losing things in the wind: her hat, her hair bow, her wand. Each time she loses something, they land and look for it and each time a new animal comes out with it and asks if there is room on the broom for them. Then she ends up with herself, her cat, a dog, a green bird and a frog.
Our first broom is a piece of pine tree branch we found in our yard. It got rather full with just the witch and cat but you can only imagine with all four animals.
Well the weight of all the creatures on the broom split the broom in half and the witch's half flies off into the clouds while the other half falls. The witch ends up meeting a dragon who loves to eat witches with fries.
I borrowed our dragon from our Irish Cinderella we posted the other day.

The dragon says this once he will have witch with no fries and is about to eat her when out of the lagoon comes a black covered creature with four heads. The dragon has never seen such a scary creature before and the creature claims the witch as its. The dragon apologizes and leaves as fast as he can. Then the bird flies off the creature and the frog jumps down and the cat finally gets off the dog. The witch is so happy to have been saved by her friends. She needs to make a new broom and tells them all to find something to add to the brew. They end up with a designer broom with a proper space for each of them.

We did not make the designer broom, but we did make a sample broom with a stick and some yarn. I made her some peg dolls for the animals and the witch.
Now the exciting news is there is a film coming out soon for Room on the Broom. You can check out the Facebook page for this film and the Pinterest Board. Plus The Gruffalo Brand has a Room on the Broom page with a trailer to the film, all the different versions of the book, and an activities section including finger puppets to make out of paper and word activities!

Now it is your turn to share a Julia Donaldson book or if you do not know her books, check out some of these other posts so you can decide which one to read first!
