Diwali begins today! Diwali is a Hindu holiday that is known as the Festival of Lights. It is celebrated over a span of five days. Its dates are based on a lunar calendar, so it falls sometime in the autumn months of our calendar. When Hazel was young, we explored this holiday with books and made some crafts for it. The overall theme is light and goodness will always triumph over darkness and evil. It is a time for gathering with family and friends and celebrating each other's inner lights. It is perfect for people celebrating but also for kids who want to learn a bit about the holiday. The book is Diwali Coloring & Activities Book for Kids by Anuj Syngal. From Me:
This book has pages to color as well as activities like mazes, word searches, connect the dots, word scrambles and more. It introduces words connected to the holiday and Hindu culture like rangoli and diya as well as having pictures to color of elephants, peacocks, and mehndi (henna). The people in the illustrations are all dressed in traditional Indian clothes. With about 50 pages of activities and illustrations to color, it will keep a child entertained for quite a while. The activities for the most part will be for older kids who know words and reading.
I colored the first illustration in the book with markers mostly. I would suggest coloring with crayons or pencils because the markers did bleed through the page as well as onto the inside front cover. I always like to do a marker test when reviewing a coloring book so you will know if it holds up to markers. This one does not. The pages are double-sided so it would be a shame to ruin the back of the page. The book however is great for kids to learn about Diwali or who know about Diwali but need some quiet time or perhaps for traveling to a celebration. There are different activities as well as different illustrations that will be of interest for different personalities and it is a fun book! So whether you are celebrating the Festival of Light or just want to learn about it with your kids, I hope you will pick up a copy. And remember this Festival of Light provides hope for us all whether we celebrate or not! Happy Diwali!
