Randy Rainbow and the Marvelously Magical Pink Glasses

Disclosure: I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

The start of school is fast approaching and that means time to think about back-to-school. For some kids this is very stressful. School can be very tough for the kids who are different. They may be quiet and shy or outspoken and dress uniquely. At some point someone may bully them, and the truth is there is only so much the adults in kids' lives can do to help end bullying. Schools have rules and states have laws but the enforcing of either can be difficult. It is important for kids to be able to be themselves at school and be comfortable. If they are not comfortable, they are not going to really learn at school. Today we are sharing a fun picture book about a young boy finding the courage to be comfortable with himself and have the bullying end. The book is Randy Rainbow and the Marvelously Magical Pink Glasses by Randy Rainbow and illustrated by Jaimie MacGibbon. It is recommended for ages 4 to 8.

About the Book:

A National Bestseller!

In his first ever picture book, New York Times-bestselling author Randy Rainbow tells a fun, powerful story about embracing who you really are - even when it's easier to blend in.

Randy Rainbow is uniquely himself. He loves painting his nails and listening to old Broadway albums.

But when some kids at school tease Randy for being who he is, he goes to his beloved granny for a solution. And she has just the thing - a pair of sparkly pink glasses.

The moment Randy puts the glasses on, the drab world around him turns Technicolor in a blink! The town swimming pool? It's full of mermaids, including a mer-Randy!

Everything is more fun with the glasses - including Randy himself - and Randy's confidence grows and grows. But is the magic inside the glasses... or inside Randy.

Perfect for readers who live bright colors, pink sparkles and unforgettable main characters, Randy Rainbow and the Marvelously Magical Pink Glasses is destined to become a favorite.

From Me:

This book is perfect for back to school or really any time. Randy loves to dress differently from the other boys and really kids. He likes bold and flashy colors and to wear suits. When the popular boys laugh at him and make fun of his clothes he tries dress like the other boys, but his light is slowly dimming. When he is at his grandmother's he sees a cool looking pair of sparkly pink glasses with stuff she is donating. She tells him they are her marvelously magical pink glasses. She comes up with a story about if he taps them twice and says the magic words they will transform where he is to where he wants. When he tries this at school, he tells jokes, and the other kids are laughing with him. He wears his magical glasses everywhere. He becomes popular and even gets invited to the most popular boy's party. On the way to the party his glasses break when he trips and falls. His grandmother tells him the glasses were never magical, but the magic was actually inside him. He feels awkward at the party but begins to dance to his favorite song. Kids start to laugh at him until he taps his head and says the magical words. The surroundings don't change but he gets more into his dancing, and everyone wants to have as much fun as he is, and they all join him. He learns that the kids will like him if he doesn't worry about being different!

This book is perfect for teaching kids to have confidence in themselves and be true to themselves. People will like them for who they are if they are enjoying themselves. The story is sweet and fun. The magical glasses are a fun twist, and I have to say I love his fun style. It definitely reminds me of some students I have taught. The message of being oneself is such an important one for kids to learn. I also love that Randy loves Broadway songs seeing how we often listen to musical songs all the time with Hazel's love for theatre. This book is perfect for reading at home before school or a school story time to teach kids to be themselves and accept each other as they are. The story itself is unique but reminds me of some other books we have shared previously. Those books and some others for back to school are Ellie's Dancing Shoes, Jacob's New Dress, A Costume for Charly, Pink Is for BoysOddbird, Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed, Anything But PinkThe Princess and the Dragon, You Are a Beautiful Beginning, Milk Goes to School, the Princess in Black Series, and the Hamster Princess Series.
