Are you getting excited for Friday? Have you been reading all my Multicultural Children's Book Day reviews the past couple of weeks? Today I get to share another one with you. This one involves accepting oneself for your differences and being loved for who you are. It is an enchanting tale that involves unicorns! It is called The Tale of The Black Unicorn by Sandra Elaine Scott and illustrated by Jasmine Mills.
In this book we meet a young girl named Reina. She is a Black girl who wears glasses and the kids at school tease her about her glasses and her dark skin. Her parents tell her the tale about the black unicorn. In the unicorn's world each unicorn is different and celebrated for his or her difference. One young unicorn named Reina tries to hide her differences when they start to appear. She keeps turning colors and designs of things around her. One day all the colors combine and make her black. Throughout her changes her parents keep telling the young unicorn she is beautiful and loved. They tell her she does not have to hide her differences because they make her special. The message in this book is wonderful and it should be heard by all children!
The pictures in this book are fun and the message is so important. It is repeated over and over, "You are Loved! You are Beautiful! You are You!" I wish our society could accept everyone as they are and for who they are, don't you? It is a clever story that leads to so much more. I hope you will check it out!
