With the Earth Day Giveaway going on, I thought we would stick to some Earth Day themed books. Today we are going to share two books that are perfect for learning about the environment.

The first book is River Story by Meredith Hooper and illustrated by Bee Willey. This beautiful book takes the reader to the start of a river. "All rivers have a beginning..." the book begins. The book takes the reader through the different aspects of a river. It shares where the river slows down, what the river is like in a city and where a river ends.

The pictures are beautiful. At times you can almost hear the river going by as you look at the illustrations. The book ends with a beautiful picture of the entire river with new vocabulary words and information about the river itself. This book is a wonderful introduction to where rivers come from and how they move. It is the perfect book for a young child to be introduced to non-fiction with a story as well as some educational value.

Our second book is Welcome to the Neighborwood by Shawn Sheehy. This is a fun three dimensional book about the community of a woods. It talks about the animals different homes and how they make them and where they are. It includes a land snail, hummingbird, garden spider, honeybee, potter wasp, beaver, and stickleback. It talks about how they form a community and rely on one another.

Needless to say Hazel LOVES this book. She loves the pop-ups and I have to admit they are truly amazing. This is one of the most beautiful pop-up books I have seen. You can see a video by Shawn Sheehy discussing his concept and the book, and he shares several of the pages if you want to see more the pop-ups check it out. Candlewick Press also offers a one page Teachers Guide to go with this book and questions to use with young children. It is such a fun book with educational value. We highly recommend both of these books!
