Turkey on the Run! -- Picture Book Review

Disclosure: I was sent a copy of this book in order to provide an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Halloween is coming fast and that means Thanksgiving is also around the corner. There are so many good Thanksgiving books out there and we have shared quite a few as well as crafts and more. Some of the books are serious about gathering and sharing with others and some are quite fun and humorous. Today we are sharing a fun one. It is Turkey on the Run! by Alayne Kay Christian and illustrated by Neha Rawat.  It is recommended for ages 4 to 8.

Publisher's Summary:

A hilarious and wholly original Thanksgiving book, destined to become a holiday classic!

Run, run, run as fast as you can.
You won’t catch me for your roasting pan!

When a turkey is caught in a trap on Thanksgiving morning, he knows it can only mean one thing: a one-way trip to the dinner table. But this particular turkey won’t give up without a fight, so he takes to the streets in a daring escape! Tailed by a small group of pursuers, he’s determined to make it out of Thanksgiving Day without catching sight of a turkey baster.

But it’s possible that not is all that it seems. Maybe the group chasing him do not want to enjoy him as part of their Thanksgiving meal; maybe they have something else in mind instead . . .

Written in witty, bouncing rhyme by Alayne Kay Christian and brought to life with lush, autumnal art by Neha Rawat, Turkey on the Run! is bound to become a classic that young readers will beg to read again and again.

From Me:

When a turkey gets caught by an old man and his wife tries to invite him to an event, the turkey escapes and runs. The turkey's saying is very similar to what the Gingerbread Man says in his story. As the old woman chases the turkey others join in the chase. The turkey does not want to end up in the roasting pan, so he keeps running. When he thinks he finally escaped, he turns a corner and discovers many turkeys running to escape the roasting pan. He leads them and crosses the finish line of the turkey trot. The prize is to be the guest of honor at the dinner. He thought he was going to be the dinner until he discovers they just want him to be their mascot because their meal is vegetarian except for the fish.

My first thought reading this book is it is perfect for any story time. It is a fun book to read in front of group of kids. They will love the turkey's antics and the chase. I remember being a mystery reader for Hazel's preschool and kindergarten classes and this book would be a huge hit!! It is fun, funny and full of action.

It is also a fun book for any story time whether public, classroom or at home. I love how the turkey thinks the people dressed as turkeys are really turkeys. The kids will love all the antics of the turkey. And if reading at home or with a small number look at the pictures. For example, the turkey loses a shoe in the picture above. See what the kids can find when reading it. It would also pair nicely with Turkey Trouble for humorous reads and creative turkeys.
