Happy First Day of Summer!! To kick off this season I get to share a fun book about sea creatures. Every summer Hazel and I always studied something about the ocean/beach. We always have a beach trip since we get the Cape house for a week. Plus, there are always great crafts to do with the treasures you find on a beach. So, to go with today's book I am sharing a roundup of sea star themed crafts! The book today is Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Sea Star by Kathleen Welton and illustrated by Chau Pham.

From Me:
Have you ever heard the old example of seeing hundreds of sea stars washed on the beach and only having time to throw a few back into the water? As an individual you feel like your effort is not enough, but the morale is it means something to the sea star that you save. This book reminds me of this situation. The sea stars have been stranded on shore by a storm. They are helpless. Max and Myrtle Turtles see them and want to help. They call on other animals to help the sea stars return to the ocean where they can live. Sea birds (look like sea gulls) bring a carpet and get the sea stars on and fly them to the water. Owls and otters help get them into the water and dolphins and ducks form a band to cheer on the rescue mission. Each animal plays its role in the mission and get the sea stars back into the ocean where they can go deep into the water and finally get some much-deserved rest.
I love the messages in this fun book. We all need to help one another and work together to fix problems even natural disasters. Our efforts matter to each of the saved sea stars as they would matter to helping others in different situations. The story can be applied to people, or it can be about the environmentally responsibility we have when we share this planet. The animals all want to help and make it a celebration as the sea stars are saved. The animals are watching out for their neighbors and community members. The story is upbeat and rhymes. The pages are colorful and fun. There is magic in the story, and it reminds us magic can take a while as can any rescue, but if we work together, the job will get done and be more fun.
This book is perfect for reading to a class, at bedtime, at a story time anywhere. It promotes community, helping others and taking care of our environment and the other creatures that inhabit Earth. The messages are there, and it even reminds us to twinkle wherever we are. Kids are going to love the rhythm of the words and the rhymes. They are going to love seeing the colorful pictures of animals doing amazing things and helping one another. It is the perfect chance to talk about helping others as well as what to do if you see a sea star laying on the beach. What a perfect book to kick off our summer season!
