As spring approaches, thoughts of summer adventures do as well. That always brings me to thoughts of the beach. When Hazel was younger, I loved finding books about the beach and ocean creatures around this time of year to get us thinking about our summer plans. Today I get to share a fun picture book about a crab, and it is interactive!! The book is Rescue Clickity Clack by Debra Pehrson Haun. In this book a young crab, Clickety Clack, is away from home and wants to get to his parents. He asks the readers to help him. There are activities like popping bubbles, waving to make wind and wiggling waves. Along the way the reader can notice other ocean life like a hermit crab, orca, sea stars, fish, and turtles. When he is home he celebrates by making clickety clack noises with his claws. At the end of the book are fun facts about the animals in the book including crabs. There are even names of the different fish featured in the illustrations.
This book is so fun!! On each page is an instruction of some movement to help Clickety Clack find his way home. I can see young kids loving this interactive part of the book. There is also a good amount of information about crabs and ocean life and the illustrations are detailed and beautiful! However, I truly think the kids will love making the actions while reading the book. I remember when Hazel was young, how much she loved books where we did special things like actions and sounds. I can see many kids loving this aspect. I also think it is a fun book to read over and over because there are different things to do with the kids. For example, at the end of the book where there are species of fish and the fun facts about the different animals, the kids can look at the fish and then find them and the other animals in the story.
Origami Crab
The perfect craft to go with this book is a crab of course! I have been on an origami kick as we are doing my origami project in geometry class. I found an easy tutorial at Moms and Crafters. I've adjusted it slightly here.
The steps are fairly easy. First you fold the paper on the diagonals with the side you want showing up. Then you flip the paper over and fold it in half to form rectangles in both directions.
When you flip the paper over and use the folds it makes a star shape that flattens to be a triangle. It is actually called the waterbomb base in origami. Many projects start with this base including my bunny balloon from the geometry project.
The next step is to flip the triangle,
so the vertex is pointing down. Fold one side about 1/3 of the way down but you really want to fold it back.
You repeat the step on the other side.
Now you flip the crab over and fold the flat top down about one half inch.
Fold the right side up to begin making the claw legs.
To make the claw you fold the right side of the top of the leg over to make it thinner.
Fold the bottom triangle up about one half to three quarters of an inch.
Flip the crab over and the origami part is complete.
I was hoping to add googly eyes to it, but I couldn't find mine, so I used paper ones instead.
Crab Crafts Roundup
Now origami is not the easiest craft for some children and especially young ones. Another idea is to have the kids do a crab walk and have them race.
