Disclosure: I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. I am working with The Children's Book Review and Dalisse Siqueiros to bring you this post.
All kids can feel big emotions but imagine what it is like for a child or person with autism. I teach many students with autism, and it has honestly been eye-opening to talk with some of them and get a peek inside their brains. They are truly wired differently. It is not worse or better but different. And as much as people fear having children with autism, if we didn't have autistic people, we would be living in a very different world without a lot of the things we depend on every day. Today we are sharing book from a series meant to help autistic kids and their parents deal with living in a world for people who think differently. The book is Autism: My Invisible Backpack: Discovering Emotions, Masking and the Joy of Being Seen by Dalisse Sequeiros and Luis Barros. After my review there is a giveaway!
About the Book:
Autism: My Invisible Backpack Written by Dalisse SequeirosAges: 6-12 | 87 Pages | Publisher: Loving Pieces Books (2025) | ISBN: 978-8409767816
Publisher’s Book Summary: Autism: My Invisible Backpack is a heartwarming story that follows two autistic brothers, Adrián and Guillermo, on a mountain hike. Along the way, children discover that everyone carries an invisible backpack filled with feelings and thoughts, sometimes light, sometimes too heavy to carry alone.
Through this powerful metaphor, kids explore four common challenges —masking, hyper-empathy, literal thinking, and emotional overload —while also learning that therapy can be a safe place to unpack and rest.
With simple language, hand-drawn illustrations, and practical tools, this book helps children and families:
- Recognize emotional overload and name feelings
- Create mask-free zones to feel safe and authentic
- See therapy as a trusted space to share openly
- Celebrate moments of being truly seen and valued

From Me:
This book is aimed towards autistic children; however, I would say most kids will benefit from it and the ideas in it. Everyone carries the invisible backpack. People do not know what is inside other's backpacks and we need to treat people with kindness every day. Learning to deal with the emotions in those backpacks and to let go of the big ones is important for everyone. This book helps with that plus gives an understanding to how some autistic people feel. It is well written and illustrated and is easy to follow and read. Families will appreciate the ideas in the back of the book to help autistic kids deal with different emotions and situations.
This book is perfect for a family with an autistic child or a child who feels big emotions. It also would be great for therapists and teachers who work with autistic children. It is a tool to help support autistic people and one everyone can benefit from reading. I am so excited to share my copy with the lower school teachers. We have a high number of autistic students, and I feel it will be very beneficial to them. It is such a great resource!
