Do you remember a day off from school when perhaps you were only a little sick? Herbie is so excited to have a day off. He makes a list of things he wants to do but he finishes them before lunch. He slowly discovers things like watching television is more fun when his sister is home. Then he starts wondering what is happening at school. What if today is the day something amazing happens? What if he misses something incredible? Oh, and his imagination is very creative with what could happen--a dog, pirates, aliens, ...
Like all the books by Oliver Jeffers I have read, this one is fun and super creative. It is relatable and kids will love it too. It is perfect for talking about a sick day or just for a story time. It would be fun to have readers make a list of what they would want to do on a day to themselves. Or what would be the most fantastic day at school. This book is perfect for families as well as the classroom. It would make amazing discussions and will have kids laughing.
Our second book is a collection of stories featuring Maisy. This is a book for when you want to read something short and quick but fun. The book is 5-Minute Maisy Stories by Lucy Cousins. It is recommended for ages 2 to 5.

These stories are short and fun. Maisy does things everyone may do every day. The stories are about dressing up, working on a farm, shopping, making lemonade, cleaning, taking a bath, and going to bed. All pretty much regular daily activities. Each story is told in simple terms and are easy to read. The illustrations are typical Maisy illustrations but full of color and fun.
These are simple stories and are appropriately recommended for ages 2 to 5. I would say it would also be a good book for kids when they learn to read as well, so slightly over 5. Younger kids will be able to follow the stories because of their simplicity, and they are about things kids enjoy and/or do themselves. It is the perfect book for fans of Maisy or for kids who need to be introduced to the wonderful world of Maisy. It reminds the reader of a simpler time and a simpler life. It is also a great book for various story times as well as for a trip so there are different stories in one book for different story times!
