The Untold Stories of Fairies -- Picture Book Reviews

When Hazel was young, she loved fairies!! We made fairy gardens, had fairy parties and play dates, and did so many different fairy crafts!! We also used fairies to teach different things and like many families had visits from the tooth fairy. We have shared various books and stories about the tooth fairy and what she does with all the teeth. We have also shared about the Pumpkin Fairy which we learned about when she attended a Waldorf school. We have shared quite a few posts about Halloween themed fairies as well. Needless to say, we have quite a bit of experience with fairies in this household. Today we are sharing three new picture books all written and illustrated by Diane Alber. Each shares an untold story of a different fairy who helps kids grow healthy and all three of today's books help kids' teeth at different stages of life. Each book also has a craft for the kids to make to ease the fairy's visit to your home. The first book is An Untold Story of the Binky Fairy. It is recommended for ages 4 to 7, but I would say read it to even younger kids when you are trying to rid them of the pacifier.

In this fun story we meet the Binky Fairy. She shares how babies cry a lot and sometimes need help to calm down. She gives them pacifiers, binkies, pacis, etc. However, as they get older, they find new ways to calm themselves and pacifiers can mess up their teeth once they start coming. So, when the first teeth start to come in it is time for them to stop using the pacifiers. She needs them for the new babies anyway. She suggests the kids find a bag around the house to decorate and leave outside their bedroom door so can collect all of them in the house and pass them on to the next baby.

This book is full of humor and colorful illustrations. It is the perfect read for families trying to stop using a pacifier and I love the craft idea to give the child ownership over stopping the pacifier use. It is a fun way to bring some magic and even introduce a bit about fairies doing magical things for kids like the tooth fairy!

Of course, kids need to stop using pacifiers because it messes up their teeth. Our next book is An Untold Story of the Tooth Fairy. It is also recommended for ages 4 to 7 and is the perfect book to read with the first loose tooth!!

There are many books and theories about what the Tooth Fairy does with the teeth. I think this one is the most creative and fun. In this humorous book, the Tooth Fairy shares the secret of why she collects the teeth when they fall out. They use them to build their houses since teeth are so strong. Kids are going to love this humorous story and seeing the fairy houses made out of teeth.

This book is perfect for the tooth losing ages. It would be fun to read at home or in school. The book shares a digital download of a DIY tooth box to put the teeth in for the tooth fairy. I printed it on cardstock but didn't try decorating or folding it. I could also see making model teeth from clay or cardboard and letting the kids build fairy houses. 

The final book we are sharing today comes out this week! It is An Untold Story of the Halloween Fairy. It is also recommended for ages 4 to 7 but works for any age where the child trick-or-treats and eats the candy!

In this book we meet the Halloween Fairy. She confesses that she doesn't like spooky things. She can't stand the broomsticks witches fly on and she doesn't like the costumes. She also tells readers that fairies are graded on how much joy they bring children and she struggled with this at first because her competition was candy. Then she gets an idea. She sends notes to kids that they can trade some or all of their Halloween candy for sweet dreams. She even tells them to decorate a door hanger and hang it on their door, so she knows they want sweet dreams and for her to take the candy. There is a downloadable door hanger address given in the book. I printed one on cardstock but haven't colored it yet.

This book is perfect for families that do not want the kids to have so much candy but enjoy trick-or-treating. It gives a fun way for a child to have some or all of the candy to the Halloween Fairy and instead get sweet dreams like surfing in chocolate waves. The book shares some fun candy related adventures that will happen in the dreams which will hopefully place some ideas in their brains for those dreams. I love that the Halloween Fairy doesn't like the spookiness of Halloween. She is perfect for the kids like Hazel was when she was young. She didn't like the spookiness of Halloween either. She did love trick-or-treating though. This book will also be a great story time book around Halloween in a class or public story time. Have the door hangers printed out for the kids to color and share the story with parents so the candy will be exchanged for the dreams.
