From Me:
Kloe and her friends are starting the new semester, and her brother is being his annoying, mysterious self. There is also a new girl, Jilly, who seems interesting. Kloe and her friends decide to get to know her better to see if she can be a new friend. When one of Kloe's best friends, Terry, shares a private secret with Kloe and Kloe's brother figures it out, Wreny may ruin Terry and Kloe's friendship. Kloe's mom tells her that Wreny is just maturing slower than her because he is a boy and that he will grow out of it. Kloe wants to have a more normal sibling relationship but every time she thinks Wreny is being kind and normal he turns it around. That is what he did with Terry's secret. He got a bit out of Kloe and guessed the rest. Her friends understand what a pain it is to live with him, but they are sick of hearing her complain and don't truly get what it is like. She doesn't know who to turn to. Then she discovers Jilly's secret--she has a younger sister who behaves like Wreny. And Wreny and Janey are talking all the time and showing up where they are not supposed to be. Now Kloe and Jilly have someone to talk to about the difficulties of living with a sibling who does things that reflects on them and changes the dynamic of their families and they give each other courage to live their life to their best.
The book has beautiful illustrations throughout it. The characters are all different kinds of animals. It is a story about relationships from first crushes to best friends and estranged siblings. The story really helps show that many people have difficult relatives and relationships. Kloe discovers a teacher who has one and has a trusted adult to talk about her feelings about her brother. The story is well written, and the illustrations add to the story with the various animals. The illustrations are the only way that the characters are animals. It is not in the writing. The animals are cute, and it is fun to imagine all these different animals getting along and being friends. The book however shares some great messages about how even your family members' behavior not defining you. It is up to you to live your life how you want and to be the person you want to be. It is also about taking new opportunities like meeting new friends and being friendly and welcoming. It is a fun read with great messages and is perfect for anyone struggling with a difficult family member or just wanting to have more positive relationships and be true to themselves. Let's face it that is everyone in middle school!! Don't forget to gift something to read this holiday season. This book is perfect! After all learning to have the courage to be yourself and live how you want to is truly self-care!
Usually, I bring books that I review into school. Our school is pre-K through 12th so there is usually some classroom that will enjoy them! This one however I may tie a ribbon around with the adorable Kloe stuffed animal and drop in a Toys for Tots bin as I feel it is the perfect gift for anyone middle school aged.
