New Holiday Books for Younger Kids

Disclosure: I was sent copies of these books in order to provide honest reviews. All opinions are my own.

It is hard to believe it is holiday season. Christmas is right around the corner so that means that it is time to share some of the new holiday books!! Today's grouping are books for younger kids. The first is a board book. It is Crocodile Christmas by J.D. Forester and illustrated by Reshu Lakra. It is recommended for ages 0 to 3.

About the Book:

A festive and humorous seasonal board book perfect for Christmas!

It’s Christmas Eve, and the animals of the jungle have come out to play…dress up!

Guess who’s under Santa Claus’s iconic outfit—Crocodile, Monkey, Giraffe, Elephant, Toucan, or Lion?

Rhyming text and adorable art make for a playful read-aloud that kids will love!

From Me:

This fun board book takes us to the jungle. The animals have their Christmas costumes (think Santa and elves) and ask the reader to guess which animal it is by some characteristics. The animals are a crocodile, monkey, giraffe, elephant, toucan and lion. Will your little one figure out each one?

This is a fun book! Young kids will love the guessing the animals. The book is a jungle party on Christmas Eve with all the jungle animals joining in the fun. I can see young ones loving the fun story and parents loving the shortness of board books! It is the perfect bedtime story or book to get everyone in the holiday spirit!

Our next book is perfect for the family with a newborn! It is This Is Our First Christmas by Francesco Sedita and illustrated by Magenta Fox. It is recommended for ages 3 to 7 but I would disagree. I think this book is for 0 to 7 and a keepsake for families!

About the Book:

A festive celebration of baby’s first Christmas and all the traditions that come along with the holiday.

This is our first Christmas, our darling baby.

It’s Christmas Eve, and Mom and Dad are excited to share all their favorite traditions with their newborn for the very first time: trimming the tree, baking cookies, and picking out the perfect Christmas sweater.

In this holiday-themed follow up to This is the First Book I Will Read to You, Francesco Sedita and Magenta Fox have created another tender celebration of firsts—this time leading up to the magic of Christmas morning.

From Me:

This book is the tale of a diverse couple celebrating their child's first Christmas. It shares some of the traditions of the holiday as well as what makes the first one special. The baby has new pajamas from a grandparent and a new blanket made by an aunt. The parents put up the tree and have the baby sleeping nearby when the baby is not being cuddled. It is a book about the dreams parents have and the memories they make at holidays.

This book is the perfect gift for new parents! I can see it becoming a keepsake for families and a way to keep some of the early memories alive. Honestly, I can see families writing their own memories into the inside covers and perhaps saving a few photos to remember the holidays.

Our last two books in this grouping feature some well known characters. We will start with Llama Llama: A Gift for Mama by Anna Dewdney and illustrated by J.T. Morrow. It is recommended for ages 2 to 7.

About the Book:

Llama Llama is determined to find the perfect gift for Mama in this charming Christmas installment of the beloved Llama Llama picture book series!

Merry Christmas, Mama!
What you said was true!
The best part of Christmas
Is spending it with you!

Christmas is approaching fast, and Llama Llama wants to get the perfect gift for Mama! He checks every store, but everything he thinks of just isn’t right. Will he ever find the perfect gift for Mama? Or will he realize he had the answer all along?

Complete with short, simple text, festive illustrations, and a reassuring message, this holiday installment in the treasured Llama Llama series is sure to be a perennial Christmas classic that readers can enjoy again and again. The perfect Christmas gift for little ones!

From Me:

Llama Llama wants to give the Mama the best holiday gift. He makes a special gift at school, but it gets broken. Now he doesn't know what to get her. When shopping he asks if she wants different things, but she keeps saying all she wants is to do things with him. Llama Llama comes up with a great idea to give Mama the perfect gift but needs some help to set it up. Then he can't wait to give it to Mama. His gift includes a coupon for the perfect Christmas Day spent together. The book has a page of four coupons for readers to gift their own.

I love how Mama just wants time with Llama. It is the best gift for most moms. It encourages spending time as a family and togetherness instead of purchasing or even making gifts. It is a sweet story, and I know I often feel the way Mama does when it comes to gifts. It is perfect for all Llama Llama fans but also for any young one who worries about getting perfect gifts for loved ones.

Our final book brings back a Valentine's Day favorite character. The book is Cupig Saves Christmas by Claire Tattersfield and illustrated by Rob Sayegh Jr. It is recommended for ages 3 to 7.

About the Book:

The New York Times bestselling Valentine’s Day pig is back with a Christmas adventure! When Santa is sick and can’t deliver presents, it’s up to Cupig to save Christmas!

“Another holiday enlivened by this bumbling, lovable piggy protagonist.” —Kirkus reviews

“A fun and festive choice for holiday collections.”–School Library Journal

Cupig loves love. She loves love more than chilly hands love fuzzy gloves. On a chilly December night, Cupig receives an urgent call from a sick and sniffly Santa Claus. After thorough instruction, she’s ready to fill in for Santa Claus and don the red hat and suit.

But when delivering presents proves to be harder than she thought, Cupig will have to learn about the real meaning of Christmas if she’s going to fix her mistakes and save the day!

With clever rhyming text and comically expressive art and from New York Times bestselling duo Claire Tattersfield and Rob Sayegh Jr., Cupig Saves Christmas is a hilarious and sweet Christmas adventure. Perfect for fans of How to Catch Santa Claus, Little Blue Truck’s Christmas, and The Crayons’ Christmas!

From Me:

Cupig we know from Valentine's Day. Well Santa is feeling sick and can't make the Christmas Eve trip. He calls possible substitutes and only Cupig is available. Santa tries to train Cupig but apparently Cupig did not quite understand the job. She keeps finding things a mess at each house--the stockings are still hanging by the fire, but they are dry, so she folds them, and then there are the fire hazards everywhere, so she takes down all the lights. She was so worried about taking care of the messes and dangers that she even forgets to leave the gifts. Santa is not happy when she returns with the sleigh still full. He sends her out to actually right her mistakes and leave the gifts for the kids. She learns what Christmas is actually about!

This book will have people laughing. Cupig's worries and mistakes will entertain and I love that Santa sends her back to fix them all and leave the gifts this time. It reminds us that mistakes happen but we need to try to fix them or at least learn from them. And let's face making the trip around the world twice in one night will give Cupig a good lesson on the Christmas spirit! Christmas teaches her even more about love than she already knew. She also realized she is happy with just one day a year of work. Get ready to laugh at Cupig and perhaps learn a bit about gift giving and letting go of ones worries.
