Sourgrass -- New Picture Book about Friendship & Promises

Disclosure: I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Remember when you were little and friendship was a HUGE deal. Perhaps you had a bestie that you played with everyday. Today I get to share a brand-new picture book (released today) about friendship and promises made forever. The book is Sourgrass by Hope Lim and illustrated by Shahrzad Maydani. It is recommended for ages 0 to 8.

From the Publisher:

What do you do when your best friend moves away? This hopeful and resonant book filled with soft, vibrant illustrations tells the story of two friends who find a way to keep their special friendship alive, no matter the distance.

Every day, Sofia and May meet at the door of their shared fence. Sofia can always count on May to show up and May can always count on Sofia to wait for her. One spring day, Sofia and May discover a field of wild sourgrass flowers beyond their yards. The field becomes their favorite place, and the two friends grow closer than ever. But when May moves away, Sofia starts to worry: Will their friendship last?

As the girls navigate a long-distance friendship, Sofia realizes that some friends are forever, even when they’re apart.

From Me:

This book is just so sweet. It is about two girls who live next door to each other, and they meet at the gate between their yards and play all day together. One day in the spring they go out to the fields and see a patch of sourgrass. May shared with Sofia that her mother says sourgrass shows up every spring and keeps its promise. The girls have a wonderful time together and then one day May has to move away. Sofia misses having her friend to play but they write one another. Then the letters stop coming. That spring Sofia went to the gate and saw a piece of sourgrass with its flower in her yard a the root in May's old yard. The sourgrass kept its promise just like the girls would keep theirs to be best friends. Sofia couldn't wait to write May all about it.

This book has such a sweet tone. The illustrations are sweet and so is the story. It is a traditional friendship story. Best friends love one another and one has to move away. They start to grow apart. Something brings them back together. It is a fun book that shares a diverse friendship full of old fashion fun. They nibble on the sourgrass and spit it as far as they can. They giggle and roll down hills. It is a fun book and kids will enjoy it. I hope you will check it out!
