New Christmas and Winter Books Round-Up

Disclosure: I was sent these books in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Yesterday I did a picture book review extravaganza. Today I am going to share the Christmas and winter books I have been gathering. Just in time to get you ready for the season. I am dividing them as Christmas books and winter books and putting them in order of recommended age.

Christmas Books

Our first book is recommended for ages 2 to 5. It is a lift the flaps book which all kids love. The book is Little Christmas Tree by Jessica Courtney-Tickle. The story rhymes and is sweet. It tells of the day of a little tree in the wild. It awakes sparkling with snow. There are animals and other plants around it to discover under the flaps. The little Christmas tree has a metallic detail on all of the pages. It is perfect for a young child who wants to discover what is under each flap.

Our next book is recommended for ages 2 to 6. It is A Unicorn Named Sparkle's First Christmas by Amy Young. This is a story about friendship, forgiveness and holiday fun. Lucy is excited to share Christmas with Sparkle. Sparkle however has other plans like knocking the tree down and eating the stocking. Will they still be friends after all this?

Sparkle is quite active and looks and acts a lot like a goat. However there is a bit of unicorn and Christmas magic in the story. If is a cute story and is definitely meant for younger kids.

Our next book is Coming Home by Michael Morpurgo and illustrated by Kerry Hyndman. This story is recommended for ages 3 to 7. It follows a robin on its treacherous journey home to its friend and family. It has many troubles but can he make it home to his family.

This story is a sweet and makes the reader think about the lives of animals like birds and the long journeys they make every year for warmer climates, food and more. Nature lovers and young kids will love this one.

Our next book is in the Little Elliot series. It is Merry Christmas, Little Elliot by Mike Curato. Little Elliot and Mouse are back. Little Elliot is looking for Christmas spirit. The two search the city for it and then Little Elliot has a letter hit him in his face and he realizes he has to deliver the letter right away to Santa Claus. Will he be able to do it?

This is a cute story about finding the true meaning of Christmas or Christmas spirit. Little Elliot and mouse are cute and the book is sweet.

Our next book is Tough Cookie: A Christmas Story by Edward Hemingway. When you start this book it reminds you of the Gingerbread Man, but this story has a fun twist. The cookie is not so fast and the fox is faster. The cookie is also not so sweet and rather hard. The cookie feels awful. What is wrong with him?

At the end of the book there is a cookie recipe as well as a recipe to make tough cookie ornaments for your tree. This book is recommended for ages 4 to 8. I love the twist and surprise of this story. It is a fun one.

Our final Christmas book is Bah! Humbug! by Michael Rosen and illustrated by Tony Ross. This book is recommended for ages 8 to 12. It includes a retelling of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. This book is about the Gruber family. Harry Gruber has landed the role as Scrooge in his school performance of A Christmas Carol and his father, Ray, is actually there and not away on business or at a meeting. this makes Harry extra nervous, but is Ray really present? Does the message of the play work its magic on Ray?

Winter Books

Our first winter book is for ages 3 to 6. It is Game of Gnomes by Kirsten Mayer and illustrated by Laura K. Horton. Take a look at the magical world of gnomes and meet a gnome with curly red hair named Ginger. She wants to be known for something other than her hair. She runs very fast and jumps very high so she decides she can enter the Winter Gnome Games. However Ginger doesn't always like to play by the same rules. Will she win?

She tries sledding, figure skating, and curling, but keeps getting disqualified. Then her chance comes for Ginger to prove herself. Can she do it when it is life and death? This is a fun book and so cute. It also has a happy ending. It reminds us that even if we are different we each have our own purpose and skill.

Our final book is Little Fox in the Snow by Jonathan London and illustrated by Daniel Miyares. This book is recommended for ages 4 to 8. The story follows a young red fox through a wintry day. The story itself is very descriptive and the illustrations are beautiful. It seems like a perfect winter day.

It is a fun story and has the fox eating (killing other animals) and being chased by a wolverine. Between the words and the illustrations you feel like you are seeing the story. It is a perfect winter tale.

I hope you will check out these fun, new books this year!!
