Before She Was Harriet -- a Multicultural Children's Book Day Review

Disclosure: Holiday House sent me this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own!

January 27th is fast approaching!! Today I get to share with you another amazing book for Multicultural Children's Book Day. The book today is about someone I am sure you have heard of, Harriet Tubman. The book is Before She Was Harriet by Lesa Cline-Ransome and illustrated by James E. Ransome.

This beautiful book is written as a poem. It shares with a look at Harriet's life in reverse. Most of us know her as a conductor in the Underground Railroad, but did you know she was a suffragist, a nurse and a spy? Throughout her life she had many roles and names. Each role marked different parts of her and showed her braveness and strength. This book is written for young children without much details since it is poetry. However it is touching and the beautiful watercolors are amazing!!

The words are powerful and obviously carefully chosen. The book is recommended for first grade. I think it would be a terrific introduction to Harriet Tubman for first graders, but also feel it is powerful for older kids. Holiday House provides a teacher's guide  (scroll to bottom for download link) to go with the book. It provides discussion questions, activities, vocabulary and more!! I was touched by the various roles of Harriet's life and made a little activity to go along with it.

I first mentioned six of her roles in her life and asked kids to talk about the work she did in that role and the characteristics she needed for that time. Then I give a blank table. The instructions on the page are to think about your own life and different roles you have had or hope to have and what you needed or will need to fulfill those roles. However you could also look at other historical characters and fill in the various roles they played. (For some reason Mark Twain keeps popping in my head for this.)
