Have you noticed that good manners seem to be disappearing in our society? Manners are taught and usually they are learned at home. Even if schools try to teach them, if they are not used at home, it does not do much good and with today's school there is not time to really teach good manners. Today we are sharing a book that helps teach good manners and other social skills. It is Sip Tea with Mad Hatter by Loretta Neff and illustrated by Anirban Mitra.

This book goes through the various characters of Alice in Wonderland and shows the manners and characteristics of each to have (or not to have) at a tea party which of course carry over to life anywhere. Now knowing the characters from Alice in Wonderland would make the book a bit more fun, but is not necessary. Neff does a good job of telling the reader about each character and a bit about how he or she spends the day in Wonderland. The qualities taught are knowledge, obedience, confidence, courage, dignity, honor, compassion, determination, enthusiasm, humility, kindness, patience, resilience, respect, creativity, gratitude, flexibility and grace. Each of these are shown in such a fun and amusing way. There are even lessons on doing the box step. Hazel and I had such a fun time learning and practicing the box step.

Of course there is also the entire tea party theme as well. We love it!! We love our tea parties. Having a tea party would be the perfect activity to go with this book!! It gives the perfect way to practice some of the social skills learned in the book.

The illustrations in the book are colorful and a bit bizarre like Alice in Wonderland. I personally find the Mad Hatter a bit scary, but I guess that is part of the character and why he is called Mad. Overall I found this book fun and a great book to use to introduce ideas of good social skills with kids.

Hazel's Corner

I would give it 3-4 stars. I like the lessons it taught. I loved the one on dancing the box step. I like it how it related to Alice in Wonderland. I liked how it was about how to behave at a tea party. I love tea parties.

Publisher’s Synopsis:

Sip Tea with Mad Hatter makes learning afternoon tea manners fun, meaningful, and most important, memorable. Any adult or child who reads this book will delight in the clever illustrations and correlations of Alice in Wonderland’s characters to the manners advice.

Phrases like Be as cool as a Cheshire cat, Don’t be a mean Red Queen, and My teacup runneth over with gratitude are easy-to-grasp concepts for children.

With the demanding schedules of parents, caregivers, and teachers, the importance of social skills is often overlooked. Learning social skills early, especially during childhood, can shape a child’s character and greatly impact his or her life for the better.

The EW Foundation® (EWF) vision is to teach, inspire, and motivate children to perform spontaneous acts of kindness and consideration. The benefits they receive from simple, good behavior will be both tangible and intangible. Our belief is that children can “do well by doing good deeds.“

The topics covered in this book are part of the EWF KAMP® curriculum – 2015 Promising Practices National Award Recipient by Character.org.

“Once again, thank you, Loretta Neff, for another well-written and entertaining resource that teaches important life skills.”—The Children’s Book Review
