Today I thought I would share two Japanese style things with you from Tuttle Publishing. With Halloween approaching Tuttle asked me to review and giveaway a copy of Origami Toy Monsters. This book and kit by Andrew Dewar and illustrated by Konstantin Vints has all the pieces you need to make some fun monsters. And they are not just any monsters but monsters that shake, rattle and move a bit. Some Hazel found a bit scary so we did not make those. Although the kit and book have origami in the title, it is not origami. The pieces are precut and punch out easily and some glue and toothpicks are needed for assembling (neither of which would be used in origami).

We started with the Shivering Skeleton. He was rather easy to put together and his arms and legs move if you rock him just a bit. They can also fall off if you rock him too hard. For this one I used a glue stick and did not have much trouble.

We also made the Shuffling Dragon. This one was a bit harder and I decided to use my hot glue on it because it was hard to glue some of the tiny parts. He is not perfect, but Hazel likes him. He also has a toothpick holding on one leg so he can shuffle. This kit is being offered to a lucky reader. You enter the giveaway at the end of this post.

The next thing to share is a book and CD called Once Upon a Time in Japan. It was translated by Roger Pulvers and Juliet Winters Carpenter. This book has eight Japanese fairy tales which are fun to tell and the pictures are fun and colorful. Most of the stories were new to us even after having read other books of stories from Japan.

Hazel loved hearing the stories on the CD and being able to listen to them herself. It is such a nice touch to have non-American fairy tales on a CD. This is a well loved book in our house!! We also take the CD into the car for longer trips and listen to the stories. So many options to enjoy it!!

Now it is time for the giveaway. You can win your own Origami Toy Monster book & kit. Winner must have a U.S. address. Please follow my Giveaway Rules and the instructions in the Rafflecopter. Good luck!!
